IIM Indore conducted IPMAT for admission to its Five year Integrated program on September 07, 2020. The test was conducted at 77 centres in the country and also at 34 centres abroad. The number of test takers, this year, was 19,254 which was more or less same as that of last year’s where 19,822 applications were received.

Students, who will be shortlisted in the aptitude test, will have to undergo a video based assessment and after that the final list will be declared. The current intake is 150.

Exam Pattern :

The exam, this year, was conducted on a new pattern and the same was declared by IIM Indore few weeks before the exam. The test comprised three sections namely Quantitative Ability (Multiple Choice Question-MCQ), Quantitative Ability (Short Answer Question-SA) and Verbal Ability (Multiple Choice Question-MCQ).

The detailed pattern is :

Section SequenceSection NameNumber of QuestionsTime DurationMaximum MarksMarking Pattern
Section 1Quantitative Ability (Short Answer)1030 min40+4 (no negative marking)
Section 2Quantitative Ability (MCQ)2030 min80+4/-1
Section 3
Verbal Ability (MCQ)3030 min120+4/-1

Section wise analysis :

  • 1. Quantitative Ability (Short Answer) – This was the first section in the test contained 10 questions to be solved in 30 min. The questions were from the area like Logarithm, permutations and combinations, probability, number theory, determinants, functions and arithmetic. The difficulty level of the section was moderate. One could solve 6 to 8 questions with around 90% accuracy. A good score, in this section could be 24 while the sectional cut off is expected to be around 16.

    2. Quantitative Ability (MCQ) – The second section of IPMAT was again QA but here, each question had four options out of which only one option was correct. The section contained 20 questions to be solved in 30 min. The presence of Data Interpretation (one case comprised five questions) made the section slightly easier for the students. The remaining questions were from the area like Mixtures and allegation, series and progressions, functions, arithmetic, set theory, matrices, logarithm, coordinate geometry and trigonometry. The difficulty level of the section was easy to moderate. One could solve 12 to 14 questions with around 90% accuracy. A good score, in this section could be 50 while the sectional cut off is expected to be around 24.

    3. Verbal Ability (MCQ) – This section has been given the highest weight age this year. There were 30 questions to be solved in 30 min. There was one RC comprised 6 questions and the remaining questions were based on the areas like Para jumbles, fill in the blanks, incorrect usage of words, Idioms, identifying logically correct sentences. Only Para jumble questions were without options. The difficulty level of the section was easy to moderate. One could solve around 25 questions with accuracy as high as 80%. A good score, in this section could be 80 while the sectional cut off is expected to be around 54.

Overall, the difficulty level of paper was moderate as compared to last year’s where the difficulty level was high and hence, the cut offs are likely to increase.
